we kept your brain
in the basement safe
while the artillery raged
fed it stale air spoke
softly over the mechanic
hum and thud
and now it's a silent
spring the metal pipes
end in the clouds
over split buildings
all the blood leaks
onto empty streets
and into dead earth
but still this brain
will breathe
and weep
and sing
once we've reconnected the body
